Area of Expertise
As a Professor of Dairy Science at the University of Georgia, Dr. Stephen Nickerson focuses on milking management and udder health. A few specific areas of research interest include the hormonal role in mammary cell differentiation and induction of lac¬tation in dairy cattle, evaluation of postmilking teat sanitizers in mastitis control, prevalence of intramammary infection in breeding age dairy heifers and the effects of bovine somatotropin (BST) on incidence of bovine mastitis. Dr. Nickerson has served as President of the National Mastitis Council, and Department Head for the Department of Dairy Science at Virginia Tech and the University of Georgia. In addition to speaking engagements and presentations across the United States, Dr. Nickerson has traveled to more than 20 countries as an invited speaker for milk quality and mastitis control seminars. He is a member of 15 professional and honor societies and has authored or co-authored 62 abstracts, 180 popular articles, and over 150 refereed journal articles, bulletins, books and book chapters.
