| Abstract | Undeniably heifer raising is one of the most costly aspects on a dairy. After careful analysis, it has been concluded that a 1% reduction in the overall cull rate decreased the cost of raising replacements by 4.9%. Another way to reduce costs is to reduce the herd’s average age at first calving. For every month that calving age is reduced, heifer costs are also reduced by 4.3%. --Published in the March 10, 2003 edition of Hoard's Dairyman |
