Abstract  The cost of raising heifers for replacements is significant, ranging from approximately $900-$1,500.   Feed expenses represent about half of the total cost of raising calves and heifers.  Many farmers are not aware of the costs associated with rearing heifers on their dairies, or ways to reduce these expenses.  Two key points that producers can focus on to reduce heifer-rearing costs are the feeding program and age at first calving.
