June 2009 - Featured Farm: Conant Acres

With only 23,000 cows on 340 farms, the state of Maine ranks 35th in the United States for the size of their dairy population. Despite having a small number of dairy farms, numerous renowned Registered Holstein herds have been developed in this Northeastern state. Well-known prefixes such as Brigeen, Juniper, Wilsondale, Veazland, Wauregan, Androscoggin and Pineland all originated in Maine. This state is also home to Conant Acres, Inc. operated by Duane Conant and his family.

Conant Acres is a family owned dairy that currently milks 75 Registered Holsteins and farms approximately 275 acres. The farm is operated by Duane and Betty Conant, son Dennis, and son-in-law and daughter, Steve and Debbie Keene. The herd is milked twice daily and the herd averages 27,000 pounds of milk, 3.6% fat and 3.3% protein.
